Invisible Cities is a staged musical distillation of Italo Calvino's evocative surrealist novel. Written by Christopher Cerrone and performed by four singers, small chorus and chamber orchestra, the work imagines the relationship of the historical figures Kublai Khan and Marco Polo. Directed by Louisa Proske and featuring video art by Laura Grey, the Red Light Ensemble joins forces with singers Joshua Copeland, James Rodgers, Mellissa Hughes, Rachel Calloway and the Ekmeles Choir to present this intense and compelling musical landscape.
Red Light Musicians Erin Wight, John Popham and Yegor Shevtsov perform a program celebrating the beauty and flexibility of the open form in music. The mobile sculptures of Alexander Calder cannot be fully appreciated from one angle, their slight movements and dimensionality lends them to be thought of more as experiences than objects. The works of Earle Brown, Bruno Maderna, Scott Wollschleger and Vincent Raikhel, explore many similar themes of fixed and the flexible experiences, using time and sound instead of wire and space. Projections of Calder sculptures will be projected throughout the program.
